32. William YELLAND

There are 352 descendents of William Yelland in Canada, as of 2010, according to Allen Yelland's genealogy. There are about 400 Yelland descendents in Canada from the the Yellands who immigrated to Saskatchewan in 1883 and 1919.

Thrushelton Parish Register 1832, Entry #341 states: William, son of William and Thomasin Yelland of Thrushelton, labourer, by W.W. Harvey, Curate, Parish of Thrushelton

"THRUSHELTON, or Thruselton, is a scattered parish, 10 miles S.W. by W. of Okehampton, containing 628 souls, and 3714 Acres of land, generally having a heavy soil, resting on clay, limestone, and manganese. William came to Canada on 1 Jun 1851 at 19 years of age. He worked on the farm of William Fitzgerald at Smith Township, Ontario, until November. He then apprenticed as a carriage maker and blacksmith in the shop of Thomas Hutchinson on Bethune Street near London Street, just below what was then called the Smithtown Hill. After completing his indenture as an apprentice he started in business for himself on George Street in 1856, just south of where the Capital Theatre, which opened in 1935 and closed in 1960, is now located. He then moved to what is now 462-466 George Street, across the street from the Church of the Open Bible, which is still standing today.

William, 40 and Fidelia, 40 returned to England in 1872 for some seven weeks and were passengers on the SS Prussian returning from Liverpool to Quebec, leaving Liverpool 5 Sep 1872 and arriving at Quebec 15 Sep 1872; they were ticketed to Peterboro. Also on the same ship were Grace Allin, 26 (William's sister), her husband Samuel Allin, 26, and two children, John, 3, Mary, infant. Also listed was Bessie, infant, listed as a Yelland (She is probably, Grace and Samuel Allin's daughter, Elizabeth, 3; John and Elizabeth Allin were twins.). William convinced his younger sister, Grace, and her husband, Samuel Fishleigh Allin, to emigrate to Canada.

He retired at age 60, in 1892. The business was carried on by his son, Joseph Henry, until the age of the motor cars arrived.

He was held in high regard for his honesty and integrity in all his dealings and he always stood by his word. He was a man of great physical strength; his voice and bearing commanded attention; and having once spoken, that was the course he pursued. He was a champion of the cause of temperance.

He was originally a Bible Christian. On the union of the Bible Christians with the Methodists in 1884, he became a member of the George Street United Methodist Church.

Politically he was a Liberal. He was elected to Peterborough city council from 1877 to 1895. He was elected as the 15th Mayor of Peterborough 1896-1898, for two terms. His address at the time of his death was 207 Murray Street, Peterborough, ON: Peterborough Examiner Newspaper, ON

William and Elizabeth were married 1 Sep 1857 by Rev. E. Roberts. He also married Mary Jane Down, 31 May 1893, at Lakefield, ON, with John F. Allin, son of William's sister Grace, of Peterborough & Evelyn Gordon, daughter of Mary Jane's sister Sarah, of Lakefield as witnesses.

In the Peterborough City Directory 1888-89, he was a carriage maker; worked at 462 George Street, his own blacksmith shop; and lived at 466 George Street.

A picture, received 13 Jul 2011, from the Peterborough Museum and Archives, from the Roy Studio Photographs Collection, dated 1910, shows William Yelland with a man, a woman, and a baby. Probably, the woman is Eva May Yelland, William’s grand-daughter (daughter of William George), with her husband, Edward Benjamin Colborne, and their daughter, Marion Margaret Colborne, born 26 Apr 1909.

Information from "History of the County of Peterborough, Biographical Notices":
William emigrated to Peterborough alone when he was only nineteen years of age in 1851. His father and mother both died in England. Soon after his arrival, Mr. Yelland began an apprenticeship at carriage-making, with Thomas Hutchinson. In 1857 he married Elizabeth Fidelia Sweeting, a daughter of Jonathan Sweeting, of the Township of Smith, a farmer. He has been on the Town Council of Peterborough for several terms. He is a good business man, and has been very successful since his advent here. For nearly a generation of time he has carried on a large and successful business in his adopted town -- employing many hands in the work, and he is now branching out into the coal business, in view of the late devastation of the adjacent woodlands. In connection with his sons he now carries on a very extensive and profitable trade. He is very much interested in church matters -- being a member of the Bible Christian Church, and a Trustee of the "William Hall Charity Fund." He was Mayor of Peterborough from 1896-1898.

Peterborough Examiner Newspaper, 20 Sep 1920:
DEATH EX-MAYOR WILLIAM YELLAND
Was a life-long Resident of Peterborough
In the passing of William Yelland, ex-mayor of the city, at one o'clock yesterday afternoon. Peterborough has lost a life-long resident and one who always had the interests of the city ever deeply at heart.
The deceased was born in Devonshire, England, in 1832. When he was 19, he came to Canada with his sister and settled in Peterboro, then a struggling town along the Otonabee River. Here he established a carriage business in the building on George Street, across from the Bethany Tabernacle, and which is now a Chinese laundry. For over 50 years he conducted this business, about the year 1900 turning it over to his son, J.H. Yelland. The business grew and prospered, and William Yelland made a name for integrity and honesty, and through being constantly in touch with the farming community he was known far and wide throughout the district. It is not too much to say that all who have known him loved him and respected him.
In 1857 he married Elizabeth Fidelia Sweeting of Smith Township, and of this union there were seven children, four of which are deceased, namely Dr. A.E. Yelland, who died in Feb. 1896, Fred, who died in Oct. 1898, Jonathon, who died in 1873, and Mary (Mrs. Dr. H.H. Graham), of Fenelon Falls, who died in September, 1918.
Three children survive, William G., of Toronto; Joseph H. and Benj. C. of Peterboro.
His first wife predeceased him in October, 1891, and on May 31, 1893, he married Miss M.J. Down of Lakefield, who survived him. A sister Mrs. S.F. Allin, of 199 Murray Street survives.
The late Mr. Yelland was actively interested in municipal affairs and he served 13 years on the City Council. His first term as alderman was from 1877 to 1881, and his second term from 1883 to 1888. He again entered the municipal arena in 1896, and during the next year was mayor of the town. His business capacity was of great value to the council and he threw himself wholeheartedly into his civic duties. During his two year term the city made great strides and no little credit for which is due to the deceased.
In politics he was a staunch Liberal; in religion a Methodist. He was for nearly three quarters of a century a member of the George Street Methodist Church, one of its trustees and a faithful worker in any worthy cause.
The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at the Little Lake Cemetery. Service will be held at the house at 3:30 o'clock by Rev. W. Harold Young, of the George Street Methodist Church. Friends are requested to please omit flowers.

William is buried in the Little Lake Cemetery, Section C, Range 16 South, Lot 23, Grave 1 (no Shell)
Cause of death: Edema, Enteritis, Age 88 Years.

THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PETERBOROUGH
BY-LAW NUMBER 05-031
BEING A BY-LAW TO DESIGNATE CERTAIN PROPERTIES IN THE CITY OF PETERBOROUGH UNDER THE ONTARIO HERITAGE ACT, R.S.O. 1990, c. 0.18 (464 George Street North)
THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PETERBOROUGH BY THE COUNCIL THEREOF HEREBY ENACTS AS FOLLOWS:
1. That the hereinafter described properties be and they are hereby designated to be of historical and architectural value or interest pursuant to the provisions of the Ontario heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. 0.18, for the reason hereafter stated:
464 George Street North
PT LT 1 E of GEORGE ST. & S of MURRAY ST. PL 1 TOWN of PETERBOROUGH as in R506466, S/T & T/W R506466; PETERBOROUGH CITY.
REASON FOR DESIGNATION
Set just south of Peterborough’s Civic Square, the William Yelland building has both historical and architectural value. The building is historically significant in its connection to William Yelland, a local businessman and politician who built 464 George Street for his blacksmith and carriage business. Yelland was heavily involved in local politics, serving as a councillor for 13 years before being elected as Peterborough’s 15th Mayor in 1896 and again in 1897. As Mayor, Yelland fashioned himself as a representative of the workingman, and his carriage shop was often used as a space for political discussion.
Yelland’s son, Joseph Henry, carried on the carriage business until the advent of the automobile rendered carriages obsolete. Over the years, the building has served a variety of commercial purposes, and survived several fires.
Architecturally, it possesses simple Victorian architectural features such as recessed brick panels, dichromatic brickwork, and wood framed windows. Built to house a carriage/blacksmith shop, the building possesses clean, straightforward lines that echoed the solid working values of its first owner, William Yelland.
464 George Street has value in its representation of a utilitarian 19th century commercial building, and contribution to the heritage character of George Street. It is representative of a period in Peterborough’s history when the downtown was the centre of commerce, industry and politics, all of which have a historical connection to 464 George Street.

The Family Register which William Yelland completed for the members of his family on 27 May 1918 appears to have been completed under The Statistics Act wich was an Act by the Canadian government in 1918 which created the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, now called Statistics Canada since 1971. The act was last revised in 1985. The Statistics Act gives Statistics Canada the authority to "collect, compile, analyze, abstract, and publish information on the economic, social and general conditions of the country and its citizens."

33. Elizabeth (Betsy) Fidelia (Fiddie) SWEETING

Elizabeth was the first child born on the Sweeting homestead farm in Canada.

The Branch family bible, Page 1, kept by Burritt Branch, shows Jonathan Sweeting Sr's marriages and his family's births: His marriage to Martha Marriott, 7 Aug 1809, and births of her seven children; his marriage to Hannah (Anna) Collings, 15 Jan 1824, and births of her four children.
It shows: "Betsey Fidelia Sweeting Born Sept 15th 1832."
Copy of bible in possession of Carol Faye Branch Mason.

The Branch family ties into the Yelland family through:
Cuthbert Branch married Mary Sweeting, 19 Oct 1850.
Mary's father, Jonathan Sweeting Sr, married Hannah (Anna) Collings, 15 Jan 1824, his second wife.
Mary's sister, Elizabeth Fidelia Sweeting, married William Yelland, 1 Sep 1857.

Trent Valley Archives shows Fidelia was possibly born 17 Dec 1832 in Cobourg.

Marriage record of son Albert lists her as "Fiddie" Sweeting. It would appear that she had a nickname for both of her given names, Betsy and Fiddie.

Elizabeth was originally a Baptist, then became a Bible Christian. Her occupation was listed as a seamstress.

The 1861 Canada West Census states she was 25, born in Canada West, and she was a Baptist.

The 1871 Ontario Census says she was 35, born in Ontario, and her religion was Bible Christian.
Reel no. C9986, Dist. 56, West Peterborough, S. Dist. Town of Peterborough, First Division

In the 1881 Census William and all his sons were listed as Bible Christian, but Elizabeth, and their daughter, Mary, were listed as Baptist.

He came to Canada in 1849 when he was 3 years old. He lived in Norwich, ON until 1870 when he moved to Walkerton, joining his brother, John, in the carriage business. From there, he moved to Breckon (Denfield), operating quite a lucrative business. He lived in London, ON in the 1881 Census and he was a Store Keeper. He moved his family to Winnipeg shortly before the great flood of 1882. He and his family moved back to Ontario in the spring of 1885 to Chesley and later back to London in 1892. (the soldiers were mobilizing for the second Reil rebellion). He moved to BC in 1899.

In the 1901 Census, his Nephews, Charles Tuckey, born 6 Oct 1872 (7 Nov 1872); and Chester, born 2 Mar 1879, were living with his family.

47. Mary Ida BALDWIN

Mary was raised on a farm at Berwick, Illinois. She married at 16 years and farmed for 6 years before moving to Winnipeg in April 1879 to join her husband, who had moved there in 1878.

The 1910 US Census for Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois, shows Ida Fairchild as head of household, Widow, living with her son Charles N. and her mother, Phoebe A. Baldwin, Widow.

48. John HENDERSON

The source of much information for John's descendants was "The Henderson Family History" by Myrna Leah (Henderson) McDonald (Daughter-in-law of Susan Celestia Henderson).

He was probably born between May 1812 and Sept 1812. If he was in his 76th year when he died on 11 September 1888, as stated on his headstone, then he should have been born before 11 Sep 1812. He was 68 in 1881, when the 1881 Census was taken in May 1881, it would make him 69 sometime after May, so he would have been born after May 1812. Therefore, it would make him born between May 1812 and Sept 1812.

Robert Joseph's Marriage Certificate states that his father was John Henderson and his mother was Janet McCann; Robert's Death Certificate states that his father was John Henderson, born in NS, and his mother was Jessie McKeand, born in Scotland.

For many years, John and Jessie farmed in the Pleasantview (Henderson Settlement, Wentworth) area of Nova Scotia.

14 May 1846 (Grant 948, Book Y, Page 242, found in Book 14, Line 13, Page 165) John Henderson of Wallace in the County of Cumberland, Husbandman, was granted 200 acres of land situate lying and being in the said County.

7 Dec 1857 (Grant 3827, Book 24, Page 16) John Henderson of Wallace in the County of Cumberland, Yeoman, was granted 110 acres of land situate lying and being in the said County, for one Peppercorn (a very small payment used to satisfy the requirements for the creation of a legal contract) of yearly rent, adjoining land formerly granted to the said John Henderson,

1851 Census for Canada East, Nova Scotia:
Head of Family - John Henderson

1861 Census, Cumberland County, NS states:

The following people fit into these groups:

Age 10-15 (1846 to 51) 1 Male William R. 1846

In the 1871 Census for Wentworth, Cumberland, Nova Scotia, Page 14, he is 58 years old (Born 1813), of Scottish origin, born in NS, a farmer, and a Presbyterian, Household Number 44, Family 46.
He is shown with his spouse, Jessey, 59, and three children, John M., 34, William R., 24, and Eleanor J., 22. Also, William McKeand, 58 (abt 1813), born in Scotland, is living in the same household (Probably Jessie's brother, William Stewart McKeand, born 10 Apr 1814).

The Lowell's 1871 Dominion Directory, shows John Sr., James, Robert, and Thomas Henderson, all farmers; and John Jr. (John McCann), storekeeper.

In the 1881 Census for Wentworth, Cumberland, Nova Scotia, taken in May 1881, he is 68 years old (Born 1813), of Scottish origin, born in NS, a farmer, and a Presbyterian, Household 15.
He is shown with his spouse, Jessey (69), and two others, William (34)(M), and Margaret (32)(M), probably William R. and his wife. Samuel McKeand is next door in Household 16

The McAlpine Nova Scotia Directory, 1890-97, shows James, Robert, and Thomas Henderson, all farmers in Wentworth; and John M. (McCann), general dealer and postmaster, Henderson Settlement; and Wm. R. Henderson as general dealer and lumber, Greenville.

John Henderson Obituaries:
15 Sep 1888, Page3, The Morning Herald Halifax, NS
At Wentworth, Sept. 11th, John Henderson, aged 76 years.
17 Sep 1888, Page3, The Morning Herald Halifax, NS
At Henderson Settlement, on the morning of the 11th Sept., of Bright’s disease, John Henderson in his 76th year, much respected and dearly beloved father of Councillor Henderson, of Wentworth in the county of Cumberland.

John and Jessie are buried at Stevens Cemetery, Wentworth, NS. They share the same headstone. The headstone reads: "In Loving Remembrance of John Henderson, who died Sept. 11, 1888, aged 76 years; Also his wife, Jessie McKeand, who died Jan. 26, 1890 aged 79 years."

I have searched the probate records for Nova Scotia and it appears that John Henderson did not have a will, at least it was not probated.

There is a John Henderson, born about 1781 in Scotland, died 8 Apr 1857, in Truro, Colchester, NS; married in 1802 to Catherine Hall, born abt 1780, in Bonshaw, Dumfries, Scotland. These could have been John's parents, but there is no proof and they are in another county.

There is a Catherine Henderson's Ontario Death Record #019414 states: She died 27 Jan 1871 (81 yrs 8 mo 16 days). This makes her born 11 May 1789; in Sligo, Ireland; Relict of the late James Henderson; the informant was James Gracy, her son-in-law; religon was Church of England; and she died in Etobicoke, York, ON. This is probably not the Catherine Hall who married John Henderson.

In the 1871 Nominal Return of Deaths within the last twelve months for Wallace, Cumberland, NS, there is a James Henderson, Church of Scotland, born in Scotland (Abt 1786), farmer, widow, who died in November 1870 at 84 years, of Disease of Kidneys.

In the 1901 Census, there ia a Janet Henderson, widow, born 3 Jun 1819, in Nova Scotia, Scotish origin, and her son, David Henderson, single, head, born 3 Dec 1862 in Nova Scotia, Scotish origin, farmer. She could be the widow of one of John's brothers. They were in Household 35 and the Woodlands who married into the Henderson family, were in Household 39 and 40.

49. Janet (Jessie) McKEAND

Source of much of the information: The Henderson Family History by Myrna Lee McDonald nee Henderson. (No relation)

Robert Joseph's marriage record states that his parents were John Henderson and Janet McCann. Robert Joseph's Death Certificate states his parents were John Henderson and Jessie McKeand. Jessie's headstone says Jessie McKeand. The 1881 Census calls her Jessey Henderson. Family Search IGI baptism record states her name was Janet Mckeand.

Jessie died at age 79 years on 26 Jan 1890, as stated on her headstone, buried along with her husband, John Henderson. They are buried at Stevens Cemetery, Wentworth, NS.

Her obituary in The Morning Herald Halifax, NS, 29 Jan 1890, says:
"At Henderson Settlement, January 26th, relict of the late John Henderson, in her 79th year, from paralysis. The deceased was a native of Scotland. She immigrated in the year 1832." (The 1901 Census states her brother, Samuel, came to Canada in 1832 also.)

There are several "McKeands" buried in the Wentworth Cemetery that could be related to Jessie:

John McKeand 1801 - 1864 Native of Scotland - could be Jessie's brother
Ellen (Helen) 1777 - 1867 Wife of John? - probably Jessie's mother
(Ref: LDS Tape 1294778 - Helen McKeand - Widow - died August 21, 1867 at 91 years at Wentworth - Informant - J. Henderson)
William McKeand 1814 - 1884 Died in Halifax - probably Jessie's brother
(Ref: 1871 census - William McKeand was living with John and Jessie Henderson, very likely Jessie's brother)
Samuel McKeand 1819 - 1906 - probably Jessie's brother
(Ref: 1881 census - Samuel and Elizabeth McKeand were living close to John and Jessie Henderson - Family 15 and 16)
(Ref: 1891 census - Samuel McKeand was living close to James and Nancy Henderson (Robert Joseph Henderson's brother) - Family 101 and 102)
(Ref: 1901 census - Samuel McKeand was still living close to James and Nancy Henderson also Robert S. Henderson - Families 116, 117, and 118. Samuel McKeand immigrated to Canada in 1832)
Elizabeth 1825 - 1911 Wife of Samuel McKeand (1871 census)
Thomas McKeand 1857 - 1921 Son of Samuel McKeand (1871 census)
John R. McKeand 1852 - Son of Samuel McKeand (1871 census)
(Located near graves of the Hendersons)

50. Gabriel Smith PURDY

Gabriel Smith is the seventh generation of Francis1 Purdy.

He died at age 90. He was 69 in the 1881 Census.
He was a Methodist.

Gabriel S. and Susannah began courting at the old well where members of both families were accustomed to come for their evening supply of water. On 4 Oct 1836, he married his first cousin, Susannah Purdy. She was the daughter of Henry Purdy and Frances Embree. Susannah's mother, Frances, was very much against the marriage because it was a first cousin marriage and because Gabriel was the son of a first cousin marriage. Gabriel and Susannah's family are sons and daughters of first cousins and grandsons and granddaughters of first cousins.

Gabriel and Susannah resided in Greenville, now called Westchester Station, NS. They were both buried in the Westchester Baptist Cemetery.

Gabriel S. Purdy entertained politicians such as Sir Charles Tupper and W.T. Pipes. When the Greenville school was moved because of the railway, about 1870, Gabriel deeded a lot on his property and the school remained there.

The 1871 Census shows James Newson, 32; Susan Amelia, 28; and Edgar, 8 months living with Gabriel S.

He was listed in the 1868/69 Nova Scotia Directory as a farmer and miller (200 acres, Wallace River, B16, page 163, NS Archives). He established saw mills and grist mills needed by the early settlers. The grinding stones in his grist mill came from Scotland and were still in Westchester County in 1975.

He gave each of his sons a farm when they married.

51. Susannah Sarah PURDY

Susannah is the seventh generation of Francis1 Purdy.

She was 66 in the 1881 Census.

She was buried in the Westchester Baptist Cemetery. On her headstone is written, "She pleaded the cause of the poor and needy."

Death record states he was 75 years old; died 6 Oct 1875, at Wallace, NS; married; born in Sligo, Ireland; his parents were Richard and Jane Woodland; he died of Inflamation of the Lungs, pneumonia; the informant was Robert Woodland.

In the 1871 Census, Richard is 70 years old; his wife, Anne, is 66; Meriah is 26; Robert is 24; and there is a Tompson Colter, 12, living with them.

53. Anne (Annie) COLTER

In the 1871 Census, she is 66, born in Ireland, a Baptist, and a Thompson Colter is living with them.

Ann Woodland was living with Robert and Priscilla on the 1881 Census. This is probably Robert's mother, as she was 75 years old, which makes her date of birth abt 1806.

Robert's marriage record states that his parents were Richard and Annie.

Amelia's marriage record states her parents were Richard Woodland and Ann Cotter (Colter)

Anne Colter, born about 1806, daughter of Daniel Colter, married to Richard Patrick Woodland, could be a cousin of Eliza Colter, born about 1813, married to Stephen Stuart.

55. Eliza COLTER

Anne Colter, born about 1806, daughter of Daniel Colter, married to Richard Patrick Woodland, could be a sister or cousin of Eliza Colter, born about 1813, married to Stephen Stuart.

Family Search and the IGI also shows her birth as Abt 1837.

60. Andre Joseph GAUDET
