102. Henry PURDY

Henry is the sixth generation of Francis1 Purdy.

Henry and Frances lived at Westchester, NS. Both are buried at the Rose Cemetery.

Excerpt from Claton Purdy's book - "Gabriel Purdy"
Up in the Cobequids, where, for eons, old Sugar Loaf has stood on guard, there is a small, well-cared for cemetery, enclosed with a neat fence. On a hill, the white stones glow in the sunlight and the traveller can see from afar this "City of the Dead." But in the center there is a monument, taller by far than any other. Drawing near the inscription reads: In Memory of Henry Purdy, Esquire - Died March 20, 1857, in his 69th year of his age,
Vain his ambition, noise and show;
Vain are the cares that rack his mind;
He heaps up treasures - mixed with woe;
And dies and leaves them all behind.

The "N.B. Reporter - May 1, 1857," carries Henry's obit ... "At Westchester of Cumberland County on the 29th of March, 1857 after a short illness, Henry Purdy, Esq., in the 68th year of his age." Mr. Purdy was highly esteemed and respected by all knew him. He left a widow and 11 children to deplore his loss.

Across the road from this cemetery called "Rose" is the Embree Cemetery where lie Joseph Embree, died November 18, 1828, age 68, and Catherine his wife, died April 2, 1846, age 85. The Embrees were Loyalists.

124. Joseph GUEGUEN

The death certificate of his son, Maximillien, states that Joseph Gueguen was the first founder or settler of the parish.

Joseph Guéguen was a remarkable man in his lifetime because of his superior intelligence and because of the schooling he had received. Born in Morlaix, in Britanny (now in the Finistère Department), on May 2, 1741, son of Jacques Guéguen and Anne Hamonez. On his mother's side, he was related to Abbé Jean-Louis LeLoutre, with whom he came to Acadia at the end of April 1753. Destined first to the priesthood, Joseph had to give up his religious vocation because of an injury. He married at Baie des Ouines (Baie-Ste-Anne), during the summer of 1760, to Anne Arsenault, daughter of François Arsenault and Anne Bourgeois. Later, they were prisoners at Fort Beauséjour. In 1765, they passed through Miquelon on their return in 1767 to settle at Cocagne. After the death of Anne Arsenault about 1770, Joseph contracted into a very unhappy marriage with Marie Caissie, daughter of Joseph Caissie and Marie-Josèphe Lapierre, and widow of Pierre Lambourt. After the death of Marie in November 1807, Joseph married a third time, at Cogagne, on February 19, 1808, to Anne Surette, daughter of Joseph Surette and Isabelle Babineau, and widow of Casimir Melanson. Joseph Guéguen died February 28, 1825 at Cocagne.
