Obituary of Eliphalet Cross Lewis:
In Berwick Township, on the 25th of June, Mr. E. C. Lewis, age 59.
When an aged man dies, it becomes us to ask ourselves what has been the history and character of his long life. Has it been one the memory of which will exert a good or a bad influence on society? The above thoughts came into our mind a few days ago, as we looked on the lifeless remains of E.C. Lewis, who departed this life June 25th, 1869 in Berwick township. Brother Lewis was one of the oldest members of the Berwick Baptist church. He was baptized about 29 years ago, on the same day with his wife, by Elder Wilber, then the pastor of the church. He was in no sense a noisy Christian. At home, in the church, a neighbor, a citizen, he was the same uniform, quiet Christian gentleman. Perhaps we say none too much of him when we say he maintained for 30 years one of the best ordered families in Warren county.
He was born in New Jersey, where he lived until he came to the State of Illinois 30 years ago, his family consists of his most excellent companion and five childen. All survive him. Death had not hitherto entered their family group. Brother Lewis, possessed of all his mental faculties, died of heart disease, composed and resigned to the will of the God who gave him life and being. And thus passed away our beloved brother, just entering upon his seventieth year. His remains were taken to the Berwick Baptist church, followed by a very large concourse of friends and citizens. The funeral sermon was preached by the pastor of the church, J.B.. Conyers. May we all imitate his virtuous and excellent life.
